ReFa has been developing products that use technology to reproduce the techniques of beauty professionals such as estheticians and hairdressers, with the aim of creating beauty that everyone can enjoy.
In our pursuit of "professional skills," we have found craftsmen (professionals) who possess traditional Japanese craftsmanship.
We will launch a new product series that combines the "skills of professionals" who have been weaving Japanese culture and traditions for hundreds of years with ReFa, under the new project mission of "promoting the skills of professionals who weave Japanese traditions to the world." We will continue to develop products that allow people to experience the "luxury of traditional craftsmanship blended into their daily lives."
The first project is the "ReFa HEART KYOTO," a combination of Kyoto x Japanese Lacquer (Urushi) x ReFa HEART BRUSH. Kyoto is home to numerous traditional crafts. Among them, lacquerware, also known as "JAPAN" in English, is one of Japan's most representative traditional crafts. This time, we applied the lacquering technique cultivated in Kyoto to the ReFa HEART BRUSH. We hope that people will not only enjoy looking at lacquerware, a traditional craft, as a work of art, but also use it daily as a hairbrush to feel its comfort and beauty, and enjoy its glossy change over time as it is used more and more.
The surface design uses gold powder to express the "Kamogawa River" and the "Gojunoto (Five-Storied Pagoda)," both of which are representative of Kyoto, by using the lacquer decoration technique called "Makie."
■ Development Background
There are many traditional crafts rooted in each region of Japan. Behind this value lies the nature and climate of the region, the lifestyles and identities of the people, and the culture and history of the region.
ReFa's desire to convey the value of uniquely Japanese beauty, which is a crossroads of nature, time, and people, and ReFa's unique design and functionality, to the world as well as to Japan has been realized. As such, Kyoto City and the Kyoto Municipal Institute of Industrial Technology and Culture have arranged a partnership with a lacquerware craft studio.
While learning about Kyo-shikki (Kyoto lacquerware) at the workshop, we learned that lacquerware not only has value as a product, but also as a concentrated form of uniquely Japanese beauty born from professional techniques. For example, its high functionality as a paint has remained unchanged over the years in its ever-changing history, the traditional techniques have been handed down in the production area, and the high skill of the lacquer (lacquer painter).
We started development with the desire to enjoy the "gloss" of hair that becomes shiny with the ReFa HEART BRUSH and the "luster" of lacquer that is polished by continued use. After some trial and error, ReFa HEART KYOTO was born.
As a gift of Kyoto City Hometown Tax, to which we have received this wonderful opportunity, we will convey the value of "beauty" unique to Japan to as many people as possible and contribute to the development of traditional culture and crafts, even if only in a small way.
